Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Komotini (DEAYK)
The Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Komotini is one of the first companies that were established under Law No.1069/1980. It is a non-profit private law entity, which aims at the study, construction, maintenance, exploitation, management and operation of the water supply, sewage and storm system and also wastewater treatment units in the Municipality of Komotini. The Municipality of Komotini was formed by the merger of the former municipalities Komotini, Aigeiros and Neo Siderohorio. It is part of the Eastern Macedonia & Thrace Region and has 66,919 inhabitants (2011 Census).
DEYAK has carried out a broad programme of development and modernisation of its infrastructure the last years.Investments include the improvement of water abstraction and water transport pipelines, the upgrading and expansion of water transfer pumping stations, treatment facilities, sedimentation tanks etc.
Within LIFE-IP AdaptInGR, DEAYK seeks to sustainably manage the water resources of the municipal department of Aigeiros under climate uncertainty. The municipal department of Aigeiros is primarily an agricultural area where water irrigation takes place mainly through drilling. During the peak summer period, it attracts a lot of seasonal residents and tourists that put increased pressure on water resources. The innovative implementation of a pilot remote metering system for real time monitoring of water demand and dynamic management of water supply, will allow DEAYK to detect changes in water consumption and water losses and to view several network parameters in real time. In other words, it will enable remote control on the municipal water supply system and will allow DEYAK to optimize water management during demand peaks and droughts. Projections for future climate and its impact on local water balance will be considered and integrated into the design and operation of the pilot system.
