ELLINIKI ETAIRIA Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET)
ELLET has been active since 1972 in the fight for the protection of the environment and the preservation of the cultural heritage of Greece. ELLET is the only NGO active in both these domains in Greece.
ELLET has led numerous campaigns covering a broad spectrum of environmental and cultural issues, many of which met with success. The establishment of the Marine Park of Alonissos, the saving of Plaka, the protection of: the Delphic landscape, the Southern Saronic Gulf, Pylos, the Prespa lakes, the Tatoi estate, part of the area of Marathon, the ancient tower of Kea, many byzantine churches and historic settlements, such as those of Hydra and other Aegean islands. ELLET has received awards for exemplary restoration projects and its seminars on the protection of traditional settlements. ELLET has also vast experience in training, capacity building and publishing material for the preservation of natural environments and cultural landscapes.
ELLET is Europa Nostra's official representative in Greece. Europa Nostra is the largest citizens' movement for the safeguarding of Europe's cultural and natural heritage. At present ELLET together with Europa Nostra are implementing the ENTOPIA project for the protection of cultural monuments and landscape. Furthermore, ELLET together with WWF represent Greek NGOs in the National Climate Change Adaptation Committee.
With regard to LIFE-IP AdaptInGR, ELLET leads the assessment of climate change impacts on landscape and land uses in nine pilot transects, on three archaeological sites (Delphi, Delos, Mystras) and on two historical sites (the traditional settlements of Central Zagori and the Old Town of Corfu). It also leads the development of guidelines for their adaptation to climate change, as well as the project actions for the primary and secondary education. In addition, ELLET contributes to raising public awareness of climate change adaptation and to disseminating the project results.
