Academy of Athens (AA)

The Academy of Athens was founded with the Constitutional Decree of March 18th 1926, as an Academy of Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts. Today, it comprises 14 research centres, including the Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology.

The Centre was founded in 1977 and is addressing both global and regional climate changes in different space and time scales, establishing collaborations with many international research centers and Greek educational and research institutes. The Center focuses on climate processes at global and local scales through both observational analyses from satellite and surface platforms and climate modelling studies. The Center provides expertise not only on future but also on past and present climate variability, trends, extreme events, and their effects on infrastructure within time scales from years to decadal.

The Research Centre for Atmospheric Physics and Climatology  has developed model simulation datasets for greenhouse gas emission scenarios A2, A1B, B2 and B1, which served as a basis for the report “The Environmental, Economic and Social Impacts of Climate Change in Greece” (2011) prepared by the interdisciplinary Climate Change Impacts Study Committee (CCISC) of the Bank of Greece. Furthermore, under a memorandum of cooperation for climate change issues signed in 2014 by the Bank of Greece, the Academy of Athens and the Ministry of Environment, the Academy of Athens contributed to preparing a first draft of Greece’s National Adaptation Strategy.

With regard to LIFE-IP AdaptInGR, the Academy of Athens actively participates in monitoring and evaluating Greece’s adaptation policy and leads the development of the updated report on “The Environmental, Economic and Social Impacts of Climate Change in Greece”, both to provide substantial input in reviewing and revising the National Adaptation Strategy. In addition, the Academy of Athens, during the project preparatory actions, contributes to producing future climate projections based on RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 for the 13 Regions of Greece and for the pilot areas under study. The Academy of Athens also chairs the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Scientific Advisory Committee.
