The LIFE-IP AdaptInGR Capacity-building workshop on the Adaptation of the Region of Central Greece to Climate Change is completed

The General Secretary of Natural Environment and Waters of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Petros Varelidis, the Deputy Regional Governor for the Environment of the Region of Central Greece, Ilias Kyrmanidis, and the Director of the Green Fund, George Protopapas, opened the Three-Day Capacity-Building Workshop for the Adaptation of the Region of Central Greece to Climate Change, which was held online from 18 to 20 January 2023. It was the 5th of a series of capacity-building workshops of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project and was co-organized by the Green Fund of Greece and the Region of Central Greece.

The participants got acquainted with the EU and national policies for adaptation to climate change, the climate projections for the Region of Central Greece, specific adaptation related-projects such as the reconstruction programme of Northern Evia, the impacts of climate change on the primary sector, mainly agriculture and animal husbandry, and the natural environment, as well as the  available financial tools for adaptation.

Moreover, they were familiarized, through practical exercises, with available methodologies for assessing the climate change of infrastructure projects, but, also, with  nature-based solutions, and other measures to adapt to climate change and mitigate its impact..

The LIFE-IP AdaptInGR is implementing 3 pilot projects in the Region of Central Greece, including the cleaning of the drainage system of the dried Xyniados lake, the formation of the bed of the Sarantaporos stream on the beach of Amarynthos in Evia and the flood protection in Drimatorema stream in the area of Lianokladi, in Fthiotida, were also presented.

The workshop successfully conclude with a lively discussion, not only about the challenges, but also about the opportunities of climate change in the Region of Central Greece.
