Successful conclusion of the three-day capacity building workshop for the adaptation of the Region of Ionian Islands to climate change

The three-day capacity building workshop for the adaptation of the Ionian Islands Region to climate change was successfully concluded on Wednesday, 29 June 2022. The workshop was the third out of a series of thirteen (13) events (one in each Greek Region). It was organized as an online event by the Green Fund and the Region of Ionian Islands in the context of the LIFE-IP AdaptInGR project.

The workshop was addressed by Regional Governor of Ionian Islands, Ms Rodi Kratsa-Tsagkaropoulou; the General Secretary of Natural Environment and Water of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Mr Petros Varelidis; and the President of the Green Fund, Mr Stathis Stathopoulos.

During the workshop special focus was given on:

  • Informing the audience about the relevant policies, including the Regional Adaptation Action Plan, and the funding options provided by the Regional Operation Programme ‘Ionian Islands’ for the programming period 2021-2027 which is under approval;
  • Familiarizing the participants with tools and good practices regarding the prioritization of adaptation measures, the application of climate projections and indices and the implementation of vulnerability analysis;
  • Brainstorming and open discussion with experts on issues regarding climate risks and vulnerability, adaptation solutions for the coastal zone, climate change impacts and vulnerability and planning of adaptation measures for increasing the resilience of the biodiversity and ecosystems sector of the Ionian Islands, including specific reference on Nature-Based Solutions.

Apart from the Green Fund and the Region of Ionian Islands, consortium partners that participated to the workshop included the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the National Technical University of Athens, the National Observatory of Athens and the Academy of Athens. In addition, the workshop included invited speakers from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Management Unit of Zakynthos, and Ainos National Park and Protected Areas of the Ionian Islands of the National Environment & Climate Change Agency, the Benaki Phytopathological Institute, the University of Geneva and the integrated LIFE-IP 4 NATURA project.

In total, one hundred and eight (108) people attended the workshop.
